Artist Bio
Milton Resnick (1917-2004) was a Ukranian born, first generation, New York school Abstract Expressionist. He studied commercial art first at Pratt Art Institue, and then at theAmerican Artists Schoo;l where he changed his focus to serious painting.
In the 1930's, he was employed by the WPA Federal Art Project where he formed close relationships with giants such as Willem De Kooning and Arshile Gorky and became embedded in the downtown avant-garde art scene.
He was drafted into the army in 1940, serving in the European Theater before returning to New York to paint abstractions and became a founding member of "The Club", which became the central gathering place for abstract expressionist painters at that time.
Over a six-decade career, Resnick developed a large body of work known for its large scale, use of heavy impesto, near monochrome color fields full of texture and variation most with deep, intense, often "brooding" coloration.
Resnickj was widely exhibited and is included in importsnt collections such as the Whitney Museum of American Art and The National Gallery.
Throughout his life, he was fiercely independent, remained devoted to the existential questions of paint and painting eschewing the limelight and fame, preferring to focus on his work.
In the 50's and 60's he was primarily shown by Tanager Gallery, Poindexter Gallery, The Stable Gallery, Tibor de Nagy Gallery as well as The Jewish Museum, The Whitney and The De Young in San Francisco.
In the 1990's he was shown by Robert Miller Gallery and Cheim & Read. The estate is represented by Miguel Abrau Gallery.
The Milton Resnick and Pat Passlof Foundation on Eldridge St often mount shows of his work and is dedicated to his legacy.
