Artist Bio
Lambdin’s mature works focus on botanical still life that reflect both scientific precision and sensuous beauty. As the popularity of rose cultivation grew in Victorian America, Lambdin capitalized on the nation’s fascination, translating popular taste into fine art and becoming perhaps the best-known flower painter of his era. He lived and worked in Germantown, Philadelphia, at the center of American rose culture, and actively participated in horticultural societies. Lambdin’s flower paintings—often distributed widely as chromolithographs—combined the dramatic lighting, colorism, and trompe-l’oeil traditions of 19th-century still life with a subtle, poignant symbolism.
