Artist Bio
Dennis is a modern landscape tonalist- reviving a late nineteenth centruy tradition in American painting. Unlike "En Plein Air" Hudson River School artists, many of these landscapes are conjured from imagination.
Dennis Sheehan decided to become a painter the first time his father took him to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston as a child. Born in 1950, the second of four brothers, he pursued that calling through the Vesper George School of Art and the Montserrat School of Visual Art, training in the distinguished "Boston School" tradition. He further refined his craft studying with Robert Cormier and Richard Whitney, both former students of the renowned R.H. Gammell.
Working from his studio in Manchester, New Hampshire, Sheehan creates contemporary realist landscapes in the tradition of the French Barbizon School and the American Tonalists. His pastoral paintings are produced entirely from imagination — quiet, atmospheric compositions that evoke the moody beauty and deep peace of the natural world.
His work is characterized by a muted chromatic scheme and a rare sensitivity to atmosphere and the subtle tonality of color. Where many painters record the reflections of light on a surface, Sheehan pursues something more elusive — paintings that seem to generate their own luminosity from within, particularly through the careful orchestration of shadow.
Sheehan's paintings can be found in major public and private collections, including the White House and in the personal collections of Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton.
He has held solo exhibitions at the Whistler House Museum of Art in Lowell, Massachusetts and at The Guild of Boston Artists, where he is a member. His work is exhibited at the Salmagundi Club in New York City, The Guild of Boston Artists, and galleries worldwide.
