Artist Bio

Jules Eugene Pages (1867–1946) was an American Impressionist painter best known for his landscape, marine, and genre works. Born in San Francisco, California, to parents of French ancestry, he was raised in an artistic environment, apprenticing in his father’s engraving business.

In 1888, Pages moved to Paris to study at the Académie Julian under Jules Joseph Lefebvre, Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant, and Tony Robert-Fleury, absorbing the techniques and spirit of Impressionism. After returning to San Francisco, he worked as an illustrator for The San Francisco Examiner and other newspapers.

In 1902, he returned to Paris, where he taught night classes at the Académie Julian and spent the next four decades there, while frequently visiting San Francisco to paint and exhibit. He was honored as a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor in 1910 and gained acclaim at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in 1915.

Pages’ work captured the light and atmosphere of both French and California scenes, and he played a key role in introducing Impressionism to Northern California’s art community USA-Painter.org. He died in San Francisco on May 22, 1946, leaving behind a legacy in major collections such as the De Young Museum and Musée d’Orsay.
