Artist Bio
Charles Warren Eaton (1857–1937) was an American artist celebrated as a leading figure in the Tonalist movement, recognized for his poetic landscapes and masterful use of both oil and watercolor. Born in Albany, New York, Eaton came to art relatively late, beginning to paint at age 22 while working in a dry-goods store. Moving to New York City in 1879, he enrolled at the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League, immersing himself in the thriving artistic scene and developing a keen interest in aesthetic principles inspired by James Abbott McNeill Whistler.
Nicknamed “the pine tree painter,” Eaton was especially noted for his evocative images of white pine forests in Connecticut and rural landscapes suffused with soft light and atmospheric effects. Throughout his career, Eaton exhibited regularly at the National Academy of Design and Macbeth Gallery, becoming a foundational member of the American Watercolor Society. His awards include the Inness Gold Medal, and his works are held by prestigious institutions such as the Brooklyn Museum of Art and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Eaton’s contemplative paintings stand as luminous exemplars of American Tonalism.
