Mauritz Frederik Hendrick de Haas (1832–1895) was a Dutch-born American marine painter noted for his dramatic seascapes, moonlit coastlines, and scenes of tumultuous surf. Born in Rotterdam, De Haas trained at the Rotterdam Academy and The Hague under Johannes Bosboom and Louis Meyer, further refining his technique in London where he absorbed the influence of English watercolorists.

After briefly serving as a painter for the Dutch Navy, De Haas immigrated to New York City in 1859, aided by the patronage of August Belmont, then U.S. Minister to The Hague. He became an associate of the National Academy of Design in 1863 and a full academician in 1867, and helped found the American Society of Painters in Water Colors. De Haas specialized in depictions of stormy seas, shipwrecks, and coastal nocturnes inspired by both the American and European shorelines, including views of Holland, New England, Long Island, and the English Channel. His works, lauded for their realism and atmospheric mastery, were exhibited widely and remain appreciated for their evocative representation of the power and beauty of the sea.
