Artist Bio
Charles Codman (1800–1842) was an influential American landscape and marine painter from Portland, Maine, and is regarded as one of the earliest and most distinctive artists of his region. Codman began his artistic journey as a decorative painter, apprenticed to John Ritto Penniman, creating signs, clock faces, and fire screens before gradually moving on to landscapes and marine scenes. His entry into fine art was encouraged and widely promoted by the critic John Neal, whose support helped Codman gain prestigious commissions and a substantial patronage in Maine and beyond.
Codman’s style often blended romantic expression with realistic detail, particularly in depictions of New England’s wilderness and dramatic White Mountain scenery. Some of his notable works include “Landscape” (1828), “View of the Notch in the White Mountains” (1830), “Haymaker’s Noonday” (1835), and “Franconia Notch.” Codman’s work achieved recognition during his lifetime, and today his paintings are found in museums such as the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Portland Museum of Art, reflecting his lasting contribution to American landscape painting.
